Gemstones are typically found in solitary hues, meaning that there are not many gems which are found in naturally occurring bi-colored examples. Ametrine is one of the most well-known naturally bi-colored gems. This unique variety of Quartz gets its name from the combination of purple AMEthyst and yellow citRINE seen within the same stones. The two separate individual colors are naturally intergrown within the crystals to form an alternating "radiation" pattern of purple and yellow triangles when viewed down the c axis (see this specimen from Brian Kosnar for reference - https://www.mindat.org/photo-233854.html ). The two colors are oriented based upon their position inside the crystal to create the famous bi-color gemstones. The best stones come from the Anahi Mine in the eastern Bolivian jungle, and despite popular belief, they are not mined in Brazil. The stones are mined in Bolivia and taken across the border into Brazil where they are faceted and then they are sold with "made in Brazil" stickers on them, but no Ametrine has ever been found in Brazil. This particular gem has a "Cut Corner Triangle" cut with a nearly 50/50 yellow to purple ratio along with superb internal clarity. This is a truly beautiful stone and when Ametrine is well cut, it looks amazing. It has come to my attention that the mine is no longer in production of this material and the market has quickly "dried up".
